Spring 2 – Half Term 4

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory x 30During English lessons this half term, Year 3 have created a recount and a setting description using Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate factory for our inspiration. We focussed on creating complex sentences, using past tense verbs and generating expanded noun phrases alongside developing many other skills. We have seen a whole class progress within handwriting and presentation skills, resulting in more pupils showing pride in their English learning.

Year 3 have developed their knowledge and understanding of fractions and can now confidently tell each other what fraction of the chocolate bar Miss Taylor has eaten.

All pupils have demonstrated a keen interest in science learning this half term. We planted seeds and experimented different conditions to discover what plants need to be able to grow. By dissecting a flower, Year 3 were able to clearly see the different parts of a plant and gain an understanding of how different parts are important, each have a vital role and how plants reproduce. Year 3 pupils have shown an incredible enthusiasm throughout this topic and are keen to support the reproduction of plants within our school environment and wider community.

It has been wonderful to witness a great enthusiasm towards our geography learning this half term, which has focused on The United Kingdom. We learnt about the key geographical characteristics and discovered the different countries of the United Kingdom and regions within England. In addition, we explored the human and physical features of the UK, including the types of settlements, key topographical features and how types of land use have changed over time. We used maps and atlases to explore the UK and our local region while learning to use four-figure grid references, keys and symbols.

Design Technology has been a firm favourite throughout this half term, where we have explored a variety of pneumatic systems in real life, through videos and through dance movements. Year 3 designed their own monster toys that use pneumatic systems. When the final product is complete, we will test our products against their design and evaluate our creations.

The theme of our Religious Education lessons this half term has been Desert to Garden. All pupils display a great enthusiasm towards our religious education lessons and are always keen to discover more, share their knowledge and listen to each other. Pupils have deepened their understanding of the words and actions in the miracle of the loaves and are able to recall the story of the feeding of the five thousand.  Pupils are now able to recognise links between the offertory prayer and the story of Creation and are able to describe the parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Throughout this half term, children have explored and shared details of Holy Communion. To identify how Christ is embodied on earth through Holy Communion and what this means to them as individuals. All pupils have displayed a deepened understanding and respect for many religions, beliefs and faiths. Year 3 are showing pride and a growing confidence in planning and delivering their own fortnightly whole class liturgy in addition to showing an enthusiasm and respect towards our weekly whole school worship. Here are some of Year 3 creating doors of hope:
