Spring Term

During English lessons this term, Year 1 created a story using Julia Donaldson's 'The Gruffalo' for our inspiration. We focussed on writing simple sentences and using adjectives to add detail. Take a look at our amazing stories!

In our Maths learning, we have been investigating mass and volume. We really enjoyed using the measuring scales to compare the mass of classroom items.

In Year 1 we love reading! This term we have enjoyed celebrating World Book Day and dressing up in our book-related costumes. We have also been adding to our classroom reading scrapbook, to share our favourite book recommendations. Look at how proud we are of our super work!

As part of our Religious Education, we have been learning about Jesus' final weeks leading up to Easter. We began by writing our Lent promises, for things we will give up or give more of during Lent. We created Easter art inspired by our learning of Holy week. We also prepared our own Lent assembly, to retell the burial of Jesus. As part of this assembly, we sang songs and acted out the story, using props and costumes.

We also enjoyed learning about the festival of Holi as part of our Hinduism multi-faith day. For this day, we dressed in bright colours to represent the bright colours of Holi. We learnt about the reasons Hindus celebrate Holi and the story of Holika and Prahlad. We created art showing what each of the colours of Holi represent and designed our own Rangoli patterns. Finally, we threw paint to replicate the events of the festival. As you can see from the photos, we had an amazing day filled with lots of memorable learning.

We have really enjoyed learning about plants in Science this half-term. We identified the parts of the plants and discussed what plants need to grow. As part of this learning, we planted our own sunflowers. We placed them in the sunlight, watered them daily and made sure we used nutrient-rich soil. At the end of the term, we took our sunflowers home to continue observing their growth.

Summer Term

We have enjoyed beginning our new History topic, 'Kings, Queens, Castles and Palaces'. As part of this learning, we first investigated why kings and queens built castles. We shared our knowledge by creating actions to act out our learning. Scan to listen to our castle facts:

Then we learnt about the features of a castle, including a moat, drawbridge and battlements. We used this learning to design our own castle, which we then built. Take a look at our amazing, labelled castles!
