Summer 1 - Half Term 5

FS2 Explore ‘Things at the Bottom of the Garden’ 🌱🐝

This half-term, FS2 have been busy exploring the wonderful topic of ‘Things at the Bottom of the Garden’—a magical journey into nature, discovery, and God’s beautiful creation! We looked closely at mini-beasts, plants, and how everything in the garden plays a part in helping the world grow. The children especially enjoyed learning about bumblebees and the life cycle of a seed.

Here’s what we’ve been learning: 🐝 The Importance of Bumblebees – We discovered how bumblebees help flowers grow by spreading pollen and how they work hard as part of God’s creation. The children were amazed to learn how something so small could do such important work!

🌱 How Seeds Grow – We planted our own seeds and watched them begin to sprout. This experience helped the children understand what plants need to grow—sunlight, water, and care.

🎨 Creative Activities – The children made bee and flower-themed crafts, created bee houses and enjoyed role-playing as gardeners and pollinators in our outdoor area.

🍯 Bumblebee Day! – We finished our topic with a special Bumblebee Day, where the children tasted honey, dressed in yellow and black, and celebrated all they had learned with stories, songs, and fun activities.

This term FS2 has been learning all about Pentecost. We explored the story of Pentecost through discussion, art and storytelling. The children were fascinated by the idea of the flames appearing above the disciples' heads and how they began to speak different languages to share the message of love and peace. The children used warm colours like red, orange and yellow to create beautiful flame-inspired artwork. We talked about how the flames represent the Holy Spirit and how it made the disciples feel brave and full of joy.

This term FS2 has been learning all about VE day as we marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was an opportunity to explore a very special part of our history in a way the children can understand and enjoy. We talked about what VE day means and how people celebrated the end of the war in 1945 with street parties, music, and bunting. The children loved imagining what it must have been like to join in those joyful celebrations! We made our own flags and decorations to recreate a mini-street party in class, complete with music, dancing and cakes.

Spring 2 - Half Term 4

In mathematics this half term we explored making the number 7. We have developed the skills of conceptual subitising to describe parts of a whole set and investigated ways of making 7 with two parts. We used objects, our fingers and cubes to create the number 7. Using our fingers, we were able to describe 7 as ‘5 and 2 more’. We can use this strategy with other numbers too.

In Religious Education this half term we talked a lot about why we love God and what we are thankful for. We have learnt the meaning of some important words and created games to try and remember these. We enjoyed learning new prayers and showing love in a variety of ways. During this half term we have become confident when making the sign of the cross.

During the Chinese New Year we created lanterns and explored tasty treats while watching the Chinese New Year parade.

Our lent celebrations involved creating crafts and decorating crosses while discovering why we celebrate Easter.

We developed our fine motor skills by cutting along a given line when creating palm leaves.

We love making buns, not only do they taste amazing, it involves a range of skills, including fine motor skills for mixing and shaping and hand-eye coordination for measuring and adding ingredients. Children were able to observe how materials change with heat and learn real-life skills, such as measuring and equipment safety. Pupils then enjoyed tasting their products with a thumbs-up evaluation.

Throughout this half term we have become creative thinkers. We used our imaginations to create art using our full hands, sponges and thumbs.

Reception have enjoyed discussing what they would like to be 'when we grow up' and what good qualities we think we have that would help us to achieve our goals.

In Music we sang in time with each other and created actions to 'Father I Adore You'.

In PE we we have worked on developing our gross motor skills by balancing, jumping and climbing.

During this half term we celebrated Hinduism Day and discovered when and how the Holi Festival is celebrated.
