Religious Education
What a beautiful set of rules created by one of our pupils, after reading about the New Law.

We looked at the transfiguration of Jesus and created some beautiful comic strips.
Class Worship
Science
Our latest science topic brought about fun this afternoon, looking at contact and non-contact forces. Iron filings and magnets demonstrated forces in a fun way.

We looked at when forces are equal and how this allows for things to balance.
History
Year 5 are looking at the Ancient Maya. We started by located where the Ancient Maya lived on a world map: in Central America. We have also looked at Ancient Mayan Gods and created some of our own too!
Music
Mr Edge continues to deliver our music on a Friday, teaching Year 5 about reading music: quavers, crotchets and semi-quavers are just a few of the terms we are learning.
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
We started our Spanish this half term revisiting basic greetings and have now progressed onto learning about La Clase (The class). We can now tell you what some of the things in our classroom are called in Spanish.
Art
We've made a cracking start with our art and drew ourselves.

Moving into our next lesson we wrote our names or phrases in the style of our faces. Truly amazing talent we have in year 5. I'm sure you will agree.

P.E.
This half term we have started two different ball games: rounders and netball. Our lovely coach from Rotherham United is teaching year 5 about the rules of netball whilst Miss Tolson is teaching year 5 about basic throwing and catching skills, which will lead into playing games of rounders.

Maths
In maths this half-term we have looked at fractions, column addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division. Next half-term will see further application of fractions when looking at fractions, percentages and decimals.
We will revisit the four rules of calculation, particularly focussing on division and multiplication to ensure confidence, fluency and application to worded problems.

English
In English, we have looked at different sentence structures and applied this to persuasive writing. We created persuasive posters encouraging Mrs Williams to visit the Amazon Rainforest. This was based on knowledge from our Geography topic where we learnt about Brazil and compared it with where we live in Yorkshire.
Religious Education
What a beautiful time to join St Joseph's with Advent and the celebrations involved. We started our Advent by making a wreath, which was blessed before being returned to class. We have read our short stories from the Bible at the end of each day and hung the appropriate bauble on our Jesse tree. We visited church for mass as well as making Christingles. We have had a busy half-term!

Class Worship
Year 5 children are incredible in organising how they wish to deliver class worship, then reading a Gospel and reflecting on this as a class.

Science
This half-term year 5 has explored states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. We have looked at different materials to use as an insulator, magnets and their uses in industry, as well as materials that are soluble and insoluble.

Geography
Our topic has been comparing Brazil and where we live. We have learnt quite a lot about the Amazon Rainforest, as well as neighbouring countries and economic activities. We also looked at the water cycle and how rivers are formed from source to mouth. Year 5 worked together in teams to produce some rather awesome-looking models.

Music
Mr Edge from the Hallam Diocese, continues to provide high quality singing teaching. The last day of term we had Christmas music and Year 5 showed Mr Edge how much they had enjoyed the sessions by giving him a hug. We also delivered our fabulous carol concert in our local church where we sang collaboratively with Year 6. Our children sounded like angels.

Design and Technology
Mrs Boden and Miss Watson have modelled and supported year 5 to sew some lovely puppets. For some children this was the first time they had sewn. I am sure you would agree that the children did extremely well.

P.E. & Dance
This half-term we had our lovely dance tutor lead Year 5 into wonderful, short production based on the Amazon Rainforest.

Library Visits
Year 5 enjoyed visiting the local library where they learnt more about Brazil which is their current Geography topic. They completed different learning activities and even made a Brazilian mask!
