Year 5
Welcome to Year 5
Class Teacher - Miss Pierpoint
Summer Term
Art
We have been getting creative in our Art lessons at the start of this summer term. We had an exciting lesson of Forest School where we were able to forage for materials in order to create a piece of artwork inspired by Greek printing and pottery. We used the items we had foraged to print textured patterns to form a background. Then, atop our colourful backgrounds, we designed an intricate Greek pot.
CAFOD Workshop
We had the privilege of participating in a workshop with a representative from CAFOD who came to teach us all about the important celebrations and petitions happening this Jubilee Year. We discussed what it truly means to be a 'pilgrim of hope' and how we can convey the common good in our everyday lives. We listened carefully to the stories of our brothers and sisters from around the world and considered how we can show support and make our voices heard to provide for those in need, as we are all part of one big family under God's love.
Pilgrims of Hope
In honour of the Jubilee Year, we created prayers of hope on a beautiful stained-glass-inspired piece of artwork. We prayed for good to happen in the world, and for those in need to find peace. Some of my favourite hopeful prayers from Year 5 include 'for wars to end around the world so people can be peaceful', 'for everybody to have access to clean water and nutritious food' and 'for everybody to feel safe in their homes'. Such selfless thoughts!
History
Welcome to Year 5's historical news channel - Greek News! In history, we have been exploring significant battles that occurred in Ancient Greece. We focussed specifically on the Battle of Marathon and the Battle of Thermopylae, unpicking the temporary alliance formed between the vastly different city-states of Athens and Sparta. Reporting live from the scene for Greek News, Year 5 discussed whether the Persian invasion of Ancient Greece was truly a success, or whether they ultimately failed due to the powerful armies of Athens and Sparta.
Martin Impey Author Visit
We had the pleasure of attending an exciting workshop at our local library with the author, Martin Impey. Martin Impey has written and illustrated several powerful novels about the everyday lives of evacuees living in London during the Blitz. The children were incredibly shocked to learn how far some of the evacuees had to travel to reach safety. We had the opportunity to create our own wonderful pieces of artwork to represent World War Two which were submitted into a national competition. What thoughtful questions and beautiful artwork Year 5!
Spring Term
Art
This term, we celebrated World Art Day and decided, keeping within the theme of spring, to recreate paintings by the famous artist Claude Monet. We used a combination of watercolours and oil pastels, both of which were used by Monet himself. We made sure that our artwork captured a true love of nature's beauty, much like Monet tried to convey in all of his pieces.
World Book Day
Our favourite day of the year - World Book Day! We had a fun-filled day where we made sweet-stuffed Willy Wonka hats, wooden characters from The Wizard of Oz, a dreamcatcher from The BFG and then we caught the cheese touch from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Fantastic costumes all around in Year 5, we even had some costume prize winners!
Hinduism
We had a fascinating day learning more about the Hindu faith and what it means to be Hindu. Our focus question for the day was 'who are the Hindu gods and what do they represent?' To begin our learning, we had a fantastic assembly delivered by Sunita who taught us about Rama and Sita. Then, we discovered that a Hindu worships multiple gods through having a shrine dedicated to them in their homes. In the afternoon, we collected flowers out in forest school to make shrines of our own. What beautiful creations Year 5!
Geography
To start off our Spring Term with a bang, we started our Geography unit by exploring the local area on Digimaps. We explored the human and physical features of our local area before comparing this to the northern region of Brazil. We found that northern Brazil has more mountains than the United Kingdom, but the United Kingdom has more rivers. The majority of northern Brazil has only one river running through, the Amazon River. We were very intrigued when we discovered the famous landmarks of both locations!
