Summer Term

TALK4WRITING

We started the Summer term with a formal letter in our Talk4Writing sessions.  The children learnt the words and the actions to a letter from Mrs Wardman to the headteacher Mrs Williams.  Mrs Wardman was inviting Mrs Williams to a party at her house!

FOREST SCHOOL CROWNS IN PREPARATION FOR THE CORONATION

In our Forest school session we went on the hunt for beautiful things to decorate our own crowns.  We wanted to look as beautiful as the jewels on the actual St Edward's crown that the King will wear on his coronation.

TALK4WRITING INNOVATION

We used Mrs Wardman's party letter to create a letter from the King inviting us all to his coronation.  We took a good look at the information that a letter has and swapped it for the new coronation information.

KING CHARLES III CORONATION

We had a great time celebrating this important event.  Each class studied a King or Queen in our national history.  We studied Queen Victoria as a link to our School Days history topic.  We learnt about her becoming Queen when she was only 18 years old.  She had 9 children and they married into royal families around the world.  We also looked at King Charles and what happens at a coronation.  There was a crown competition and parents were invited to join us celebrating in class.  We were all given a commemorative medal from school as a souvenir of this special time.

TADPOLES

We have been watching our frogs spawn develop into tadpoles.  They are about to sprout arms and legs!

HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL

As part of our School Days topic, we investigated our school.  We looked at where it is, a plan of the school and who works here.  We also looked at our own school history before we start to look at the past of education in our country.  As part of this topic, we are also expecting some guest speakers - our Head of Governors studied at our school and is coming to tell us all about it and someone from our local library is coming with Victorian artefacts to explain all about this time period.

INTERVIEW

Mrs Ratcliffe came in to talk to us about her time at our school.  It was very interesting.  We were shocked that she had no TV, computer or frozen fish fingers when she was at school! We asked her questions about the subjects that she liked and the teachers that she remembered.

MODEL MAKING

As part of this topic, we have drawn plans of the school and we also made model using lego, blocks and cardboard boxes.

VISITORS

We welcomed Sarah and Emma from the Schools' Library service in Rotherham into our classroom on Friday.  They brought lots of artefacts from the Victorian period and taught us about baths time and school.  We were able to touch the objects and we even used the carpet beater on one of our class car mats.  It was an amazing afternoon and we can not thank Sarah and Emma enough for a wonderful way of learning about the Victorians.

FROGS

Our tadpoles have become frogs!  Not all of them made it but we have released the ones that became little frogs into a safe new habitat.

YEAR 1 GARDEN

We have started digging over our raised bed ready for planting some vegetables and flowers.  We hope to divide the garden into 2 halves.  One half with things we can eat and the other half with bee and butterfly friendly flowers.  It was hard work digging up all the grass that had grown over the last year but we have finally finished and are ready for planting.  We have planted some tomato seeds and sunflower seeds in pots and left them in the sunniest spot of our outdoor area.  We will keep you updated as the plants grow.

VICTORIAN SCHOOLS

We learnt about Victorian school life and compared it to our modern school experiences.  We thought about whether we would like to travel back in time and live in the Victorian period or stay in our modern times.

THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA

We read the story of the tiger who came to tea.  We loved the idea of having afternoon tea like Sophie and her mum so we set the classroom up and had jam sandwiches and biscuits.  There was a sudden knock at the door.  When we opened it, we had our very own tiger who came to tea.  He was as greedy as the one in the story and tried to eat all our food!  We realised that he was just so hungry and lonely.  We made friends with him and offered him some of our food.  The tiger left very happy and Year 1 made a new friend.

THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA - FOREST SCHOOL

We pretended to be tigers chasing our prey in forest school.  We crept up on our prey through the trees and pounced!  We even found a mum and her cub behind the trees at the back of the field.  Can you see the tiger leg in the picture?  look closely.
