Platinum Jubilee Celebrations May 2022
To mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Year 5 took part in a whole host of activities. These included blow painting, collage making, quizzing, crown making and to top it all off- a tea party with their families on the field. It was a fantastic week of celebrations marking a milestone in British History.
With the help of Miss Durkin, we've been working incredibly hard learning how to play the Ukulele! We have learnt about rhythm, how to play tricky chords and have had a go at writing our own music too!
We became archaeologists and excavated historical artefacts which gave us clues about how the people lived during the Shang Dynasty. We recorded our findings on a historical evidence sheet to help us draw our own conclusions.
To understand nets of 3D shapes, we used some polydron to construct the shape and then lay out its nets. We then went on to solve problems using this knowledge.
Our topic this term is Dynamic Dynasties where we are learning about ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and exploring the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today. We reenacted the legend of The Yellow and Emperor and the Xia Dynasty.
We have been learning how to measure acute and obtuse angles using a protractor. We had to be very accurate in recording the exact degrees.
In our Come and See this week, we have acted out the story of The Temptation of Jesus. We then reflected on times when we have found it difficult to resist temptations as we prepare for Easter.
Reading for Pleasure 18.03.22
We have loved making the most of the sunshine today by enjoying our reading outside.
St. Pius Forensic Science Visit 16.03.22
We visited our local secondary school during science week. We got to experience using a Bunsen burner to test various chemicals, a chromatography test to separate colours within ink and also used plaster casting the way detectives do to preserve footprints.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park Visit 15.03.22
As part of our Surrealism topic, we took a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. We enjoyed sketching several of the sculptures which have provided inspiration for us create our own masterpiece.
Within our Surrealism art topic, we have explored perspective and taken some funky photos using perspective to create illusions!
World Book Day 03.03.22
Miss Casey's FAVOURITE day in the school calendar. We decorated our door in the style of Charlie Mackesy's The Boy, the mole, the fox and the horse. We also enjoyed a Booknic- an opportunity to share our favourite books with our friends whilst enjoying some delicious goodies (indoor, thanks to the miserable weather).
Children's Mental Health Week 7-13th February
As this year's theme is growing together, we have planted various seeds which we are going to nurture and watch grow over the coming Spring months. We also enjoyed writing positive postcards to one another and also had some time to relax with Cosmic Yoga. Soem of the poses were very tricky to master!
Forest School 15.12.22
With the help of Kids Plant Trees, we planted several alder trees in our Forest School Area to help absorb excess water. To give them the best chance of success, they needed to be planted in deep enough holes so that their roots can grow well.
Geography- Farmer Sam's Visit 09.12.21
We have been learning where all our food comes from. We were shocked to find that many food items we love are grown overseas and shipped here. Farmer Sam told us ways we can help local farmers by shopping locally. On his visit, he also explained how dairy farms operate and we had a go at churning our own butter. it was delicious on a cracker!
As a treat for all of our hard work during assessment week, Miss Casey treated us to a delicious hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows during our Forest School session. As you can tell by our faces, it was DELICIOUS.
St Pius Design and Technology Visit 23.11.21
We visited our local secondary school this week where we made yummy oat and cranberry cookies with a chocolate topping. We learnt how to follow a recipe and use kitchen equipment safely to bake our biscuits. We then made a special mould for our chocolate out of plastic. Finally we designed and made the packaging so that we could take them home for our families to enjoy. Some of the biscuits may have been nibbled on the coach home though!
History Ancient Greek Day 21.10.21
Year 5 and 6 enjoyed the grooviest Greek days today, celebrating the end of our recent history topic. We came to school in Greek clothing, ate some Greek food, and even held our own Olympics!
