See what Year 6 have been up to below!
One week before SATs, it's fair to say that Year 6 are definitely the experts by now. So, Miss Milnes enjoyed putting her feet up and letting the children take it in turns to teach the class an arithmetic skill each. Each child used plenty of questioning to check their 'pupils'' understanding and drew visuals to support their explanations. Miss Milnes will be happy to receive job applications for her replacement if you're offering, Year 6!
Forest School 29.04.22
We have been getting lovely and mucky in our Forest School session today using mud paint! We mixed the soil with food colouring to create different hues, and some of us even challenged ourselves to use natural materials as our tools. We think they turned out rather well!
Revision relay! 27.04.22
As SATs loom closer, we have been trying to make revision slightly more fun in Year 6 this week by hosting a revision relay race. We worked together as a team to complete a reasoning and a SPaG paper as speedily as possible.
An exciting arrival... 25.04.22
A very exciting delivery arrived today! It's all getting very real now, gulp!
We have been getting practical in our Maths lesson today, making a variety of 3D shapes using paper nets. We visualised their 3D form first, then answered some abstract questions using their 2D representations.
Year 6 became scientists today! We used tights, soda water and bananas to model our own digestive system, and focused specifically on how nutrients are absorbed into our blood.
After a hard-working week, we spent our Friday afternoon enjoying the sunshine: sketching, den-building, reading for pleasure and playing catch. What a lovely way to welcome the weekend!
Yorkshire Sculpture Park 15.03.22
As part of our Surrealism topic, we took a trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. From Robert Indiana to Damien Hirst, we have become experts in art theory!
History 05.01.22- 18.02.22
We had lots of fun during Spring term learning all about Ancient Maya. We built temples, played an ancient variation of football called Pok-ta-pok, and even made our own hot chocolate drink! Have a look at some pictures which showcase our historical learning.
Safer Internet Day 08.02.22
This year, Safer Internet Day is all about gaming. Gaming is very important to our Year 6s, so we created 'gamer profiles' to celebrate the benefits of this online platform. We thought about what made us feel safe when playing online with our friends, and discussed all the ways that we can ensure we communicate and play securely.
Year 6 loved marking Miss Milnes' attempt at a SATs reading paper today. As you can tell from the wonderfully sassy feedback, unfortunately Miss Milnes did not receive any marks...
Come & See 01.02.22
As part of our Books and Sources topic in Come and See, we were lucky enough to enjoy a dance class from Adam Hague who taught us a routine to Song of the King from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat!
End of term Mocktail Party!
To celebrate all of Year 6's hard work this term, we finished with a Christmas themed mocktail party and pub quiz! It was so much fun, and very well-deserved.
Not only was it Christmas Jumper Day today, but we also had Farmer Sam come to visit. He told us all about how our food travels from field to fork, and we were able to consolidate all of our recent knowledge on Fairtrade and globalisation.
Did you know a typical non-Fairtrade banana costs 15p in UK supermarkets? We held a class debate in which we considered which member of the supply chain deserved the biggest share of the profit. After a very passionate discussion, we came to a unanimous conclusion that companies should operate under a Fairtrade licence which guarantees equal pay and suitable working conditions.
Year 6 Sleepover 12.11.21
As preparation for our upcoming residential, Year 6 were invited to a school sleepover. We had a very exciting visit from James at St John Ambulance who gave us some first aid demonstrations- we even got to explore the inside of an ambulance!
We are so proud of this wonderful Year 6 child for overcoming his fear of writing, so much so that his beautiful Remembrance poem was displayed at the local Cenotaph.
Keep up the hard work, you are a credit to the school!
Forest School 05.11.21
Remember Remember the 5th November! We certainly will with these wonderful natural firework displays made during Forest School.
Ancient Greek Day 21.10.21
Year 5 and 6 enjoyed the grooviest Greek days today, celebrating the end of our recent history topic. We came to school in Greek clothing, ate some Greek food, and even held our own Olympics!
Forest School 15.10.21
We've been stick whittling today! We used potato peelers to carve our willow bark into a variety of creations: wands, figurines, and Greek swords.
Crucial Crew 05.10.21
Today we went to Crucial Crew and learnt a variety of important skills. Throughout the day we were taught to spot the signs of child exploitation, practised delivering a 999 call in the case of fire and even performed in a magistrates court case. Miss Milnes was so impressed by how mature and sensible everybody was- even PC Paul commented on how knowledgeable we were!
Trip to St Pius 22.09.21
We had a very exciting visit to our local secondary school today to experience what a typical day might look like for us next year. It was a great opportunity for the children to gain an insight into their upcoming secondary school applications, and to get a taste of secondary school lesson styles.
Our Science topic this term is all about the classification of living things. Today, we've been using dichotomous keys to classify different types of delicious confectionary. We're not sure what was harder... the tricky Science knowledge or the negotiation of chocolate buttons in the heat!
Welcome to Year 6!
We have started Year 6 as we mean to go on: with plenty of Forest School! We've had such a great start to the year, creating tree faces and enjoying some delicious hot chocolate. Miss Milnes can't wait for the year ahead, keep an eye out on our website page to see what we get up to!
